Topic: New Advisors
Article: Academic Advisors and the Wizard of Oz
Synopsis: Using the classic film, “The Wizard of Oz”, the author extols life lessons on advisors working with students- that they already possess the skills they need to succeed in college, they just need to be shown and told it. Much like the film, advisors play the wizard, who have the power to grant the ‘brains’, ‘heart’, etc.; but like the movie, the characters possessed what they needed all along, it just had to be shown to them. The heart of the article is that advisors should help instill confidence in students by being very supportive of students- saying you can do this!
3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. – ORSS LECTURE SERIES – “Housing Students: What do we know? What can we know?” Presenter: Nick Ardinger, Campus Housing
LOCATION: Lecture Center C3
Did you know that Housing collects data that informs us about who is likely to struggle as early as the third week of the Fall semester? Housing collects data through surveys, focus groups, and institutional data, and uses that data to tailor how it works with students. This talk will review some of the data the Campus Housing department has collected about its residents, and what that data can tell us about our students and our programs.
**We are very pleased to be able to offer advisors the opportunity to attend this special session, which is part of the OVPUAAP’s Office for Research on Student Success (ORSS) campus lecture series, showcasing research being carried out across UIC to better understand and ultimately improve the success of UIC students. The ORSS Lecture Series on Student Success Research grew out of the UIC Student Success Initiative, and has the dual purpose of opening a cross-disciplinary dialogue among researchers employing different perspectives and approaches to answer related questions about student success at UIC, and putting that research into the hands of practitioners who can make use of it for the benefit of our students.

In February, we showed the introduction to the new NACADA Academic Advising Core Competencies Model (2017), which has three major components – Conceptual, Informational, and Relational. In this 57-minute videocast presentation, presenters continue the conversation with a deeper look at the Model’s Conceptual component. The competencies included in the conceptual component provide context for academic advising. The conceptual component addresses the ideas and theories that academic advisors must understand about students, their institutions, themselves, and their environment in order to appropriately convey the critical nature of academic advising to their stakeholders. The presentation is designed to help them learn more about the six core competency areas included in the Conceptual component.
