Learn more about Study Abroad opportunities at UIC and how they can seamlessly integrate into a student’s undergraduate studies though collaboration with the Study Abroad office.  We will go over various Study Abroad program models available to students and the long-term benefits to studying abroad. Discuss the challenges advisors face in planning for students to Study Abroad and share resources and tips on how to overcome possible barriers for students.

The Office of International Affairs will discuss how we as advisors can best assist International students by understanding their academic status and helping them develop a sense of belonging at UIC.

3:00 - 4:30 Student Success Lecture and Advisor Discussion - "Students Changing Major: Myths and Facts"
Lecture Center A1
Many students enroll in college without a clear sense of what they want to major in, and plan to explore different fields before committing to a major. In contrast, some declare a major and change it at some point during their college careers. The current study uses institutional data to understand how major declaration and change behavior relates to graduation outcomes and time to degree, as well as differences by college and demographic variables. Results will be framed within common myths and facts, and discussion will focus on ways to support UIC students in navigating the major declaration process efficiently and effectively.

Advisor Conference - "Building Bridges - Share, Collaborate, Learn!" 9:30 - 3:45 WITH LUNCH sponsored by the Honors College
The theme of building bridges through which we can share, collaborate, and learn has brought us together as a way to provide a professional development opportunity to advisors across campus by providing a venue to share their knowledge, interests, and experience.

The day is divided in two parts - the morning will be our casual round table discussion session "Poster without the Poster" and the afternoon will be traditional hour long presentation sessions. Don't forget lunch is being provided by the Honors College!

  • Addressing Students’ Beliefs about Learning in Your Advising Work (Presented by Crystal Tse) HANDOUT VERSION
    • What are the factors that hold back or push students forward in learning and performing the best they can? How do students go about learning new skills and knowledge? How do students react to successes and failures? In this presentation, we will introduce and explore students' mindsets, their identities, insecurities, and beliefs about intelligence and how one should learn that enter the classroom with them and that can affect their learning before instruction has even begun. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss how these concepts can impact UIC students' learning experiences and begin to develop strategies that can be implemented in their student advising work and teaching to address these different beliefs.

  • Introducing TC Connect Student Panel: Hear from students participating in pilot career development program (Presented by Melissa Frazin and Marisol Mastrangelo)
    • College students have different needs and questions related to their future careers and how to navigate the process of achieving their career goals. Hear from current UIC student participants (first and second year students including transfer students) in a pilot year-long intervention program, TC Connect, focused on increasing their career knowledge. The program has covered topics such as myths about careers, developing professional relationships with professors related to future career interests and involvement on campus aligned with possible careers.Research on low-income and first-generation college students suggests these students benefit from additional support on how to access campus resources and how to build connections with individuals who work in college who can help facilitate meaningful career planning. TC Connect is an intervention designed to address these areas by creating a high-touch network of support comprised of staff and peer mentors to encourage campus engagement. These High Impact Practices (HIPs) promote students persistence and greater sense of belonging.

Be a VIP! Summer Session has reserved the Skybox at Curtis Granderson Stadium for a fun filled viewing of our UIC Flames baseball team as they take on the NIU Huskies. Experience the grandeur of the indoor Luxury Skybox while you network and enjoy provided food, beverages, and protection from the cold (or heat – who knows what the weather will be, this is Chicago in the spring!) Enjoy a frosty beverage and stay the whole game (or one inning!) while we cheer our Flames on to victory.

Our game time got moved up an hour to 3:05 p.m. so if you want to come down to see the whole game, join us at 3:00. Food and beverages will be available at 3:30 so if you can't join us until the original start time of 4;00 p.m., don't worry - we've got plenty of time for networking and having fun!

Synopsis: Academic Advisors play an important role in the success of students on our college campuses. In fact, academic advisors are seen as teachers and not merely practitioners. Advisors now are increasingly more essential to students' development and their engagement in the campus community. Academic advising, as an educational process, is discussed in depth. A look at advising curricula and learning outcomes to further assist in the guidance of students is explored.

Have you been creative with us before? We're painting pottery again this year! If you made something last year, you can make a matching item this year! Or if you're new to this, you'll see how much fun we'll have!

Are you looking for a new mug for your desk? Do you want to have some fun painting pottery with none of the hassle of heading off campus to do it...and you'll get it delivered back to campus. No muss, no fuss...other than the enjoyment of some snacks and beverages with your fellow advisors to kick off our social events for Advisor Week.

We will have Creativita from Forest Park join us with pottery pieces for you to choose from and get your artist groove on. Then once you're done, we'll make sure we know it's yours...they will take and fire them in the kiln and we will get them back to you on campus.

*There is a fee for this class. Fees will range from $15 - 25 depending on the pottery piece you pick to paint. All pottery and painting supplies are provided.

Students Needs have Changed, Advising Must Change, Too.

Synopsis: Anft discusses how academic advising and the role of academic advisors have changed in recent years, namely, that advisors play a much more expanded role than just helping students pick courses.  Advisors are now tasked with being a one stop shop of entry points to financial aid, counseling, and teaching to help students stay on task to graduate.  Advising is becoming more centralized, more coaching focused, and incorporating less faculty members and more peers.  In making changes, some universities are seeing higher retention rates, and increased student satisfaction.

3:00 - 3:30 p.m. - Discussion and Q&A with Tanye Harrison and Upkey
The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) defines career readiness as "the attainment and demonstration of requisite competencies that broadly prepare college graduates for a successful transition into the workplace." It also provides eight core competencies that are important in the transition of a student from college to career. One of those competencies is career management, which focuses on a student's ability to "Identify and articulate one's skills, strengths, knowledge, and experiences relevant to the position desired and career goals, and identify areas necessary for professional growth," (NACE website). A new online resource to help students with their career readiness competency is Upkey. Started by an alumnus of UIC, Upkey provides an online learning platform with tools that will help students strengthen their ability to understand and articulate skills employers seek. In this session, we will introduce Upkey to you and demonstrate how this resource will be beneficial in the career management process of UIC students.
