SHARE WITH STUDENTS: Update to CURA Program for Summer 2019
IMPORTANT UPDATE: Expanded Opportunities for CURA Program for Summer 2019 to Support Undergraduate Students’ Research Experiences
The previous announcement for Summer 2019 Chancellor’s Undergraduate Research Award (CURA) program indicated that students needed to be Federal Work Study (FWS) eligible for the summer term to receive a CURA for Summer 2019, meaning a student would need to enroll in a minimum of six (6) credit hours for the summer term.
Because this requirement seemed to present a hardship for many students, campus leadership has agreed to fund Summer 2019 CURAs for students who were eligible for work study during the 2018-19 academic year, but without the requirement that students enroll in classes for the summer term.
**The Office of Undergraduate Research will thus fund a limited number of CURAs for Summer 2019 and will reimburse the sponsoring department the full amount of student wages (within the specifications outlined below) associated with the research assistant position.**
Information:
--To qualify, students will need to have been FWS eligible during the 2018-19 school year. Final approval of any application will require a student to send a copy of their financial aid letter from the fall or spring term to confirm FWS eligibility, unless that information has already been shared with the Office of Undergraduate Research.
--The wage for Summer CURAs will be the most recent FWS wage the student earned during the 2018-19 academic year.
--Students may work up to 30 hours per week in a Summer 2019 CURA-funded research assistant position.
--The work period for Summer CURA will be 5/20/2019 – 6/29/2019.
--Any costs associated with student wages for research positions for Summer 2019 beyond 30 hours per week and beyond 6/29/2019 will be the full responsibility of the sponsoring department.
The Office of Undergraduate Research anticipates being able to fund only a limited number of awards under this revised program. Applications will be reviewed in the order in which they are received, and funding will continue up to the point that funds have been exhausted.
**** To participate in the CURA program, you will need to identify the work-study student(s) with whom you are interested in working for Summer 2019. Then complete the online application at https://cura.uic.edu/information-for-faculty/.
Thank you for your continued support of students’ undergraduate research experiences!
