What is the connection between U.S. interventions in the Middle East and the portrayals of Arabs and Muslims in Hollywood? What do gender and sexuality have to do with these portrayals? How do media images impact the lives of Arabs and Muslims in their homelands and in the U.S.? The course will focus on the post-cold war era of U.S. interventions in the Middle East to 9/11 and to the recent rise in white supremacy. Students will also engage with media counter-cultures like independent Arab and Arab American film, stand-up comedy, and hip hop. Overall, students will develop tools for engaging in the changing landscape of U.S. race, gender, sexuality, nationalism, and empire-building.
