ED 294 (CRN 42138)
A Critical Perspective of Latinx Human Development
The goal of this course is for students to become better equipped in understanding the contextual, cultural and societal factors that influence the healthy development of the Latinx population in the U.S. Students will read educational and psychological research literatures related to the experiences of Latinxs in the U.S. We will examine the development of Latinx people based on oppression, resistance and critical frameworks. A variety of topics will be examined, including cultural values, immigration, family separation & detention, acculturation, ethnic/racial identity, discrimination, access & barriers to mental health services, education, and gender and sexuality. The readings cover a variety of Latinx ethnic groups, but by no means are the readings representative of all Latinxs. We will use a variety of sources to understand the developmental experiences of Latinxs, including book chapters, research articles, newspaper articles, essays/blogs, and memoirs.
This course will be on T & TH at 2:00-3:15pm
Taft Hall, Room 204
This is a mixed course with some meetings in person and some work online. The course will be taught by Dr. Bernadette Sánchez.
