PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: TT Advisor Common Readings – this Tuesday, February 11th!
Hello!
We hope that your semester was off to a great start! We invite you to our first Tuesday/Thursday (TT) Common Reading discussion of the Spring 2020 semester. For those of you not familiar with the Common Reading Committee, we host Tuesday/Thursday Topics once a month throughout the academic year. Each committee member chooses an article relevant to advising and leads an informal discussion about the article and how it relates to UIC. It is a great chance to not only participate in an advisor-to-advisor professional development opportunity but has also served as a platform to provide advisors with a chance to connect, collaborate, and learn how each college handles the needs of our student body.
Topic: Viewing Procrastination as a Coping Mechanism
Article: Procrastination Among Undergraduate Students: Effects of Social Emotional Intelligence, School Life, Self-Evaluation, and Self-Efficacy

Location: Daley Library, Room 1470
Teaser Question: How do you work with students that are chronic procrastinators?
Synopsis: Dr. Chow researched the influence of non-cognitive factors that may predict the likelihood of procrastination in undergraduate students. Dr. Chow’s research found that “students who reported lower socioeconomic income held a less positive attitude toward themselves, scored lower on the self-efficacy scale, demonstrated lower levels of emotional intelligence, and expressed dissatisfaction with school life and were more likely to procrastinate”.
The Office for Advising Development will provide treats and drinks, but feel free to bring your lunch.
