PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: September TT Advisor Common Readings being held this THURSDAY 9/19!
Hello!
We hope that your semester was off to a great start! We invite you to our first Tuesday/Thursday (TT) Common Reading discussion of the Fall 2019 semester. For those of you not familiar with the Common Reading Committee, we host Tuesday/Thursday Topics once a month throughout the academic year. Each committee member chooses an article relevant to advising and leads an informal discussion about the article and how it relates to UIC. It is a great chance to not only participate in an advisor-to-advisor professional development opportunity but has also served as a platform to provide advisors with a chance to connect, collaborate, and learn how each college handles the needs of our student body.
Topic: Delivering Bad News to Students
Article: How to Give Bad News

Date: Thursday, September 19, 2019
Time: 12 pm -12:50 pm
Location: L-1470
Teaser Question: Have you ever seen bad news delivered well?
Synopsis: Sometimes as advisors and staff we have the pleasure of delivering great news to our students like “you get to graduate a semester early!” or “you are getting a scholarship!” which is great. We also sometimes have the unpleasant task of delivering bad news which can be tough. Please come and join us as we discuss tips and a model for having to deliver tough news to students.
The Office for Advising Development will provide treats and drinks, but feel free to bring your lunch.
