The School of Public Health (SPH), at the University of Illinois Chicago Campus, invites applications for the position of Assistant Director, Career Services within our Student Affairs Department.

Under minimal supervision, provide strategic leadership in implementing and administering a comprehensive career development program for both undergraduate and graduate public health programs. This includes assessing student’s goals, interests and experiences to provide advising, resources, events and programs for various areas of career development, including career and major exploration and decision making, internship, summer job and full-time job searches, resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, networking and related career areas. Plan, coordinate and lead outreach programs for students and employers, such as career fairs, recruiting events, educational workshops and seminars.

Duties:

Student Job Search Skills and Career Preparation

  • Counsel and advise students on job search strategies, including: self-assessment, networking, and skills development; reviewing cover letters and resumes; conducting practice interviews; assisting students with employer research utilizing on-line and print resources; planning and presenting skills programs and workshops. Evaluate students’ skills and qualifications and match to appropriate programs.
  • Interview, evaluate and assess students’ skills and qualifications and develop individual career development plan. Guide students through self-assessments, identify available resources and assist students with career search.
  • Create and deliver workshops and seminars regarding career options, job search techniques, interview skills, and other related topics to classes, student organizations and other groups. Develop a seminar series related to public health careers.
  •  Establish and maintain relationships with employers to schedule on-campus interviews, recruiting events, employer information sessions and refer qualified candidates.
  • Advise students about experiential learning opportunities and resources, such as internships, shadow experiences, and related fellowships.
  • Assist students with using the Center’s resource materials by answering questions and giving direction to resources as needed.
  • Research and keep current on employment trends, career opportunities, occupational outlook, salary trends and career development practices.
  • Oversee the development of an interactive online job board accessible by potential employers, students and alumni which allows postings of both job opportunities and student resumes.
  • Provide career support to Alumni, including access to position listings and workshops.

Job Fair Administration

  • Plan, coordinate and implement outreach programs such as job fairs on-campus, attend outside job fairs, participate in student affairs committee meetings and invite employers to speak in classrooms.

Report Generation

  • Produce reports, such as on-campus interview program usage and career placement of new graduates.
  • Identify funding opportunities and participate in the development of grants and reports that will support expanded growth for related career initiatives.

Staff Management

  • Plan, assign and review work of staff to ensure that group objectives are met. Hire, train, develop and manage staff to ensure that a qualified staff exists to meet group objectives.

Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Public Health, higher education counseling or related field required (i.e. Education, Human Resources, Business, Student Affairs, Administrative Leadership).
  • A minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in career services including management and/or supervisory roles.
  • A proven record of success in career services.
  • Experience in working with people from diverse national and cultural backgrounds.
  •  Ability to develop and conduct presentations to various audiences.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, demonstrated proficiencies in information technology appropriate to career services offices.
