Date: Tuesday, January 29, 2019
Time: 12 pm -12:50 pm
Location: Daley Library, Room 1-470
Teaser Question: Do you think that panel sessions would resonate more with the student audience when the panelists openly discuss the challenges they faced and openly discussed things in a cultural context? For example, would a panelist identifying themselves as “first-generation college student” resonate more with first-generation college students that were in the audience?
Synopsis: This article explores the success of an intervention where student panelists (seniors) speak about their struggles and how they overcame them as a student. The participants in the study were broken up into two control groups. The first student group attended panel sessions where the panelists revealed their academic struggles and provided information about different backgrounds; the second student group attended panel sessions where the panelists spoke about their academic struggles, but did not share the additional information about their background. The students who attended the panel sessions that embraced different backgrounds achieved greater academic success than the students that were provided similar advice without the cultural context.
The Office for Advising Development will provide treats and drinks, but feel free to bring your lunch.
