PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Announcements from LAS Advising
LAS Advising Initiatives Kicked Off!
Mandatory Second-Year Major Advising, formerly known as Sophomore Success, is now a year-long initiative! All LAS students who began at UIC in the Fall 2019 and are enrolled for this Fall 2020 will be required to meet with a departmental/major advisor at least once during their second-year. Students can meet with an advisor in the Fall 2020 or the Spring 2021 in order to have their advising hold removed and register for their Summer/Fall 2021. We are hopeful that spreading this requirement out over their full “sophomore” year will allow them more time to choose their major and meet with the appropriate advisor.
Mandatory Transfer/Readmit/ICT Advising – All new LAS Fall 2020 Transfer, Readmit, or Intercollege Transfer students are required to meet with an advisor, either a departmental/major advisor or their assigned LAS general advisor at least once this Fall 2020 in order for their advising hold to be removed and register for Spring 2021.
Should you meet with a student who indicates they have a hold and need to fulfill one of the above requirements, please refer them to schedule an appointment with an LAS advisor. Any questions regarding either initiative can be directed to April Long, longaa@uic.edu.
NEW LAS Resource for Students: Major Advising Webinars!
LAS Departmental Academic Advising is excited to introduce new online content: LAS Advising Overview of the Major Webinar Series! This webinar series was designed to help students explore various majors in LAS and dive deeper into course requirements, opportunities for involvement, potential career opportunities, and more! We encourage students to view as many webinars as they’d like especially if they are undecided! Advisors are encouraged to share the above link with students who are interested in learning more about an LAS major! Additional webinars will be added later this semester.
