FOR ADVISORS’ INFORMATION: UIC Study Abroad Update
Dear colleagues,
Greetings from the UIC Study Abroad Office. We're writing to share an update regarding the university’s plans for study abroad programming during the Spring 2022 semester.
UIC’s Office of Global Engagement (OGE) has been monitoring the global pandemic to determine if conditions in countries where our students have applied to study are stable enough to permit the university’s endorsement of participation in study abroad programs.
OGE has consulted a variety of sources, including:
- The U.S. Department of State
- The Centers for Disease Control
- Official governmental sources for host countries
- Information from our program partners
- Arthur J. Gallagher – UIC’s international health insurance provider
Based on this information, the university has made the decision to support students moving forward with planning to study abroad next semester to countries that are currently allowing U.S. citizens entry and with a Department of State travel advisory of a level 3 or lower, as long as the level 3 advisory is only due to COVID-19. Students are being informed of their ability to move forward with their plans and advised to review the financial deadlines and refund policies of their respective program sponsor should they move forward.
UIC will conduct its last planned review of countries on November 10th. Although this is the last planned formal review, if conditions in a given country should worsen, the university would have to withdraw its support for students to study abroad and ask students to return home.
A decision about spring break programs will be made closer to the end of the semester.
To help our campus community know which students have been approved to study abroad next semester, a note will be added to student records in iAdvise after November 10th. You can also contact us at sao@uic.edu with any questions.
We are excited that some UIC students will have the opportunity to study abroad next semester!
Please be in touch if you have any questions regarding the status of a student's study abroad application.
Sincerely,
The UIC Study Abroad Office Team
