Ramadan is coming!

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic Lunar Calendar. The month is 29 or 30 days depending on the sighting of the moon. Fasting during Ramadan is the fourth pillar of Islam. It is expected to  commence on April 2, 2022 until May 1, 2022 (though the exact dates are determined by the sighting of the moon and may vary).

• Practicing Muslim students will fast from dawn until dusk (if Sunni) or a bit later when the last redness of the sun or the sighting of the first star (if Shia).
• Fasting means no food, no water, and no smoking.
• Ramadan also involves spending time with family and friends, praying, celebrating the reading of the Qur’an, and remembering those who’ve passed.
• Those fasting often wake up in early hours before dawn and before morning prayer to drink or eat.

Muslim students may be hungry, tired, and dehydrated specially if they have classes late in the afternoon.

Fasting Muslim students are likely to be especially stressed and anxious as COVID19 may prevent them from fulfilling important components of this holy month, like praying in the mosque, volunteering their services, and spending time with family and friends.

• Consider giving students options or accommodations for exams that take place in the afternoon or at dusk.
• Consider providing a short break for students to eat or drink or articulate to them that they can eat while attending class online, especially when classes are at iftar meal-time.
