PHIL 131 Education Ethics – Spring 2024
Prof. Anthony Laden

Course Description:
“Should you discipline a student for following a school policy you disagree with? Should sex ed teachers pass on information to students whose parents have opted them out of sex ed for religious reasons? What values should guide decisions about promoting or retaining a failing student: fairness, care or something else?

Teachers face hard questions like these every day.

In this case-based class, we explore strategies for thinking well about hard ethical questions teachers deal with, and practice discussing them with one another. Although the focus makes the class particularly suited to those considering a career in education, the skills developed will help facing all sorts of moral dilemmas.”
