PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Raising Awareness of Asian American Students

As a start to Asian American Awareness Month at UIC, the UIC AANAPISI Initiative congratulates Dr. Corinne Kodama, our Research Specialist, on her new publication with Dr. Dina C. Maramba: Bridging Research and Practice to Support Asian American Students.

Dr. Kodama has made a tremendous impact serving Asian American students on our own campus in many capacities. As founding Associate Director of the Asian American Resource and Cultural Center, she first started the Asian American Mentor Program (AAMP) and much more.

This is a must-read for anyone who wants to learn more about Asian American students who make up 22% of UIC's undergraduates.

It's an accessible yet comprehensive guide to understanding and working with Asian American college students--a diverse but often misunderstood population on college campuses.

Linking theory and research with practice, this volume covers a range of topics that influence Asian American college student experiences, including:

• student and identity development,
• psychological health,
• religion and spirituality,
• academic and career issues,
• engagement and activism.

The volume ends with an extensive list of resources and critical questions for readers to reflect on themselves, their departments, and their institutions to help better understand and appropriately serve Asian American students.
