What’s data science?

Data science gives you the skills to mine useful discoveries from massive repositories of information. You will be able to generate the insights organizations need to make better decisions — making you extremely valuable to businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies.

Best of all: UIC’s major gives you the opportunity to apply the techniques of data science to nearly any career field that interests you. After building a strong foundation in math, computer science, and statistics, you’ll choose a concentration, learning how to bring the tools of data science to one of these nine areas:

  • Bioinformatics
  • Business analytics
  • Computer science
  • Data processing, science, and engineering
  • Health data science
  • Industrial engineering and process improvement
  • Social technology studies (media and communications)
  • Statistics
  • Urban planning and public affairs

A data science major is customizable. A data science major is relevant to today’s job market. And it prepares you for a rewarding, well-paying career: the average salary for data scientists in Illinois is $101,000, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
