2. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - UARC April Brown Bag: National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Webinar Follow-up Discussion “Academic Advising and Social Justice” (4/29/15)
Please join us for our upcoming Spring Undergraduate Advising Resource Center (UARC) Brown Bag Event:

Academic Advising and Social Justice: Privilege, Diversity, and Student Success NACADA Webinar Follow-up Discussion

Wednesday, April 29th 12:00pm to 1:00pm
2550 University Hall (UH)

Webinar Overview (more information is available here: http://tinyurl.com/lapgp6f): Academic advisors and advising administrators must understand social identities in order to identify the challenges students face when interacting with various campus systems. However, advising professionals are often untrained in dealing with issues of privilege and diversity. In this Web Event, sponsored by the NACADA Diversity Committee and led by NACADA Technology in Advising Commission Chair Julie Larsen, our panelists will share information and strategies that can help advisors form stronger relationships with students, identify specific challenges and roadblocks facing students, and create individualized solutions to increase success and retention. In addition, they will discuss ideas for re-conceptualizing advising around issues of social justice which can foster both the ability and the responsibility to be voices for change at our institutions.

Feel free to bring your lunch and light refreshments will also be provided.

For more information or questions, please contact Melissa Tag (mtag@uic.edu).

The event is free and open to the public. Special thanks to the DRC for providing open captioning services for this year's event.

We welcome any support in spreading the word - to both graduating students and guests. Lavender Graduation recognizes that barriers exist for LGBTQ people and celebrates the academic and personal achievements of LGBTQ and Allied students in undergraduate, graduate and professional programs at UIC. The registration links for graduates and guests are live on our website on the event page. I know some print posters have made the rounds, but let me know if I can provide more printed copies.

6. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT—SAVE THE DATE (5/26) – UARC sponsored - Campus Advocacy Network Workshops: CAN will be providing information on their resources and services – once on the east campus and once on the west campus!
Now that you may have been trained at one of our UARC sponsored “Know Your IX” trainings for advisors or you may have attended one of the campus events planned for April’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the UARC is pleased to sponsor a special workshop with the Campus Advocacy Network to learn about the resources and services they provide for advisors. Rachel Caidor and Dan Cairo from the Campus Advocacy Network will spend 1.5 hours with advisors working through topics including what an advocate is, confidentiality and the role of an advocate, how advocate services work, how to refer students to CAN for services, what advisors should expect when doing a referral, CAN’s efforts to make UIC a safer community, etc.

The workshops will be held on May 26th – one on the east campus and one on the west campus. Times will be forthcoming next week! In the meantime, if you have questions you can contact Joey Volpe (jvolpe@uic.edu) who is coordinating the event on behalf of UARC.

***In addition to one of the special “Know Your IX: Essentials for Advisors” sessions being offered by the Office of Access and Equity on May 1st, the UARC planning group hopes that you are aware that CAN is hosting an event on April 30th for all campus constituents from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. in SCE 302 that will have an overview of how to deal with sexual misconduct. This event is a panel discussion with representatives from the Campus Advocacy Network, the Dean of Student's Office, the Office of Access and Equity, the UIC Police Department, and the Counseling Center. A recent announcement was sent out via campus massmail.
