Advising Summit **NEW TIME** – Friday, October 6th – LUNCH (12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.) and then Summit (1:00 – 4:00 p.m.) – we’re following Summit up with a networking event so you can continue conversations!

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: OAD Goes to the Movies in Millennium Park for “Hidden Figures” on August 15th – RSVP available!

Did you miss Trivia and Game Night? You missed a lot of fun. And the OAD team won the trivia contest…so you should join us next time!

If you missed it, there’s still time to connect with your fellow advisors and spend some quality time! Our next event will be a visit to Millennium Park for the award winning movie Hidden Figures. Here are the details:

Date: Tuesday, August 15th
Location: Millennium Park
Time: 5:00 p.m. if leaving UIC with us; 6:30 if you’re meeting us at Millennium Park

We’ll leave UIC around 5:00 p.m. and head over to get seats on the lawn – and enjoy watching the film with some great snacks and refreshments! We hope you can join us!


About the Film: The three-time Oscar Award-nominated film about the incredible, untold story of Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson – three brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains in the historic launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. The film is presented in conjunction with the Chicago Air and Water Show, happening August 19 and 20.


PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT/NETWORKING EVENT: SAVE THE DATE for OAD’s Third Annual BBQ on Thursday 8/24!

Are you ready for our Third Annual Advisors’ BBQ? We had so much fun the past two years we’re doing it again!

Join us as our advisors show off their cooking skills and let us know if you want to show off yours!

When:  5:00 p.m. (or a bit earlier if you are ready to come earlier)

We’ll be celebrating the kick off of the new 2017 – 2018 year and ending our summer together! It will be a great way to kick off our new year!

In order to positively impact the success and first year experience of our new students at the University of Illinois at Chicago, faculty and staff are encouraged to be a part of the UIC Convocation ceremony. Join us in welcoming the new UIC Class of 2021!

Time: Check in at 2:30

Location: Check in at the Pavilion Parking Lot to line up for the processional, which begins at 3:00 p.m.

Dress for the event is casual. Please wear UIC colors.
Chancellor’s Welcome Picnic

The Chancellor’s Welcome Picnic will immediately follow the UIC Convocation ceremony. Join us in the SRC Autocourt for food, fun, and games while we continue to welcome UIC’s new students.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: REMINDER – OAD Trivia and Game Night is THIS Wednesday, July 26th!

Unfortunately due to unexpected circumstances we had to reschedule our trivia and game night fun to this coming Wednesday, July 26th! So we’re hoping that you can still join us if you were planning on coming last week! (If you already RSVP’ed, just let Joey know if you can still make it…)

We’re going to have a great time – and extra time to plan means extra time to plan more FUN and NETWORKING!

NETWORKING EVENT/SHARE WITH STUDENTS: FLAMES FLIX “Kong Skull Island” movie on the East Lawn next Thursday, July 20th! Join us!

Do you like free movies in the park? Join us for Flames Flix!

Then don’t miss out on UIC’s free outdoor movie night on Thursday, July 20th!

Recent hit “Kong: Skull Island” will be featured on a massive screen on University Hall’s East Lawn. Come relax with friends and take a break from your summer work and summer studies. Lawn chairs, blankets, and picnics are welcome.

• Seating begins at 8pm and the movie begins at dusk.
• The first 400 people to show their i-card will receive a free blanket!
• We’ll also have free popcorn and water while supplies last.

Looking for something to do between 5:00 and 8:30? Let Joey (jvolpe@uic.edu) know and we’ll get a group to gather for some fun at one of our local establishments…what better way to follow up on game and trivia fun from the night before than a nice, relaxing evening and movie?

A work of social realism imbued with dreamlike imagery, El Norte is a lovingly rendered, heartbreaking story of hope and survival, which critic Roger Ebert called “a Grapes of Wrath for our time.” The film’s relevancy today serves to remind us of Chicago’s status as a welcoming city.


PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: OAD hosting Open Office Hours to develop ILACADA Conference Call for Proposals next Tuesday (July 18) and Wed (July 19). Proposals due on July 21st!

Presenting at conferences is a great opportunity to contribute to the learning in our advising community!

Are you not sure what to propose? Do you want a second pair of eyes on a proposal? Want to brainstorm on the best approach?

This coming week OAD is hosting two times for OAD Open Office Hours for advisors to come by and work through ideas for conference proposals.

Join us to discuss your proposal:

Tuesday, July 18th between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm

or

Wednesday, July 19th between 10:00 am and 11:30 am

Proposals are due on Friday, July 21st and we want you to consider presenting about the great work we do at UIC!

OAD will be providing transportation to the ILACADA Annual Conference on Friday, September 22nd – please let Joey (jvolpe@uic.edu) know if you’re interested in going with the OAD group! A formal RSVP will be sent along later in the summer. See the call for proposals below…


The deadline for the Call for Proposals has been extended to Friday, July 21st.  Also, conference registration is now open!  To submit your session proposal of register for the conference, go to http://ilacada.org/.  The theme for this year’s conference is, Advising: The Root of Student Success.  Submissions on any and all topics are welcome, but topics focused on the conference theme are preferred.

Who Should Submit a Proposal:

We encourage novice as well as experienced presenters to submit a proposal. Advisors, administrators, faculty, counselors, career development specialists, researchers, and graduate students are all welcome to submit proposals. If you have advanced techniques or proven practices to share that address higher education’s academic advising needs, please consider submitting a proposal.

Session proposals will be accepted electronically.  Click here to submit your 2017 ILACADA Conference session proposal.  Session proposal should include the name(s) of presenter(s), institution, e-mail, phone number, along with title and abstract and proposal of the session.  For more information on creating a presentation proposal and the evaluation criteria used by the reviewers, please click here to view the NACADA tutorial guide.

Session Formats:

Presentation: One-hour session that can include lecture, demonstrations, and/or participant discussion about topics relevant to the field of academic advising.

Panel Discussion: One-hour panel session where speakers address a specific advising topic each from their own perspective. Panel sessions are highly interactive with panelists representing multiple points of view from different institutions. Time is allowed for audience input and questions.

Other Important Information:

  • Proposal submissions deadline extended to July 21, 2017!
  • Week of August 21, 2017 – All potential presenters will be notified of their proposal status
  • Conference registration is now open!
