SHARE WITH STUDENTS: Study Abroad Frederick Douglass Fellowship

On behalf of the Study Abroad Office, following is information on an exciting new program and fellowship. Download the flyers on the Frederick Douglass Fellowship Flyer and the CIEE London Summer Program.

One of our study abroad academic consortium partners, The Council on International Educational Exchange [CIEE], and The Penn Center for Minority Serving Institutions have created a new diversity fellowship. It includes a 4 week study abroad session in London, during Summer 2017, to earn 3 credits [the syllabus is attached].  The Fellowship will cover 100% of tuition, fees, housing, and airfare.

This is a highly competitive award – only ten students nationwide will be selected from Minority Serving Institutions.  The students will study together as a cohort.  The attached flier describes the application process.  You’ll see that the Penn Center is requiring a robust packet of materials. The Study Abroad Office will be coordinating the collection of complete application packets and working with the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs to vet applications. Please note that there is a very early deadline – September 15th.

If subsequently selected by the Penn Center for the fellowship, this is a great opportunity for a UIC student to be recognized for their excellence and enhance their learning through a fully paid academic experience abroad.  Please share this message with colleagues.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.  A wider distribution of this message will go out at the start of the Fall term.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Help UARC plan summer events for advisors! A survey will be delivered to your inbox.

Help UARC Steering Committee plan summer events!

The Networking and Community Building Subcommittee of UARC is interested in putting on 3-5 events this summer.

Because Chicago is filled with millions of great things to do, we want to know where we should focus our efforts. Some events may involve discounts on tickets, while others may just require coordination.

A survey is being sent to your email or should have already arrived in your inbox today with the subject – “Help us plan advisor summer events!” So let us know what most piques your interest, and we’ll try to plan something that best fits everyone’s busy schedules while still giving us a chance to enjoy Chicago in the summer!

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: UARC will coordinate and fund group transportation to the ILACADA 2016 Conference on May 20th at Illinois State University.

**Please let Joey ( know if you are interested in attending ILACADA – UARC can help organize and fund transportation for a group! We would leave early in the morning on the day of the conference and get you back that evening.

The 2016 ILACADA Conference is one month away on May 20th and will be held at the Bone Student Center at Illinois State University. This year’s conference theme is Celebrating FIVE Years of Progress: Fostering and Inspiring a Vision for Education.

The conference gives you a chance to connect with more than 300 advising colleagues from across the state of Illinois to share innovative ideas to support student success and continue to develop your own advising practice.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Karen Myers from St. Louis University. Dr. Myers is an Associate Professor and Director of the Higher Education Administration graduate program at St. Louis University. She is also the Director of The Ability Institute, home of the award-winning international disability education project, Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit and the Ability Ally Initiative. You can view Dr. Myers’ full bio here.

The conference registration including ILACADA membership is $90.00.

You can register online at the ILACADA Conference web page.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Are you interested in upcoming ILACADA, Chicago Area Advisor Network (CAAN), and Region V events? Want to help UARC coordinate UIC advisors’ involvement in our local, statewide, and regional advising network?

As you probably know ILACADA’s Annual Conference is coming up in a few weeks on May 20th and is being held at Illinois State University! UIC has been privileged to have two of our own advisors continue serving in leadership roles at ILACADA – Stuart Robinson of LAS and Eliza Callahan of the Honors College. The Undergraduate Advising Resource Center, in partnership with Eliza and Stuart, have been thinking about increasing UIC’s participation in our local, statewide, and regional advising organizations and we would love your help!

For this year, if you’re planning on attending ILACADA on May 20th or want to attend but transportation is holding you back, UARC will be coordinating and funding transportation early in the morning to get to Illinois State and we’ll get you back the same day!

But even if this year’s conference isn’t a possibility for you, we’re thinking long term about UIC’s involvement in our local, state, regional, and national advising organizations. ILACADA is a great opportunity for advisors to connect with our colleagues across the state and we are excited that over the next year and a half there will be three events that we can take advantage of to learn from our colleagues but also to present our own excellent work!

Chicago Area Advisor Network (CAAN) will be holding a December 2016 event locally here in Chicago;

NACADA Region V Conference will be held in Rosemont on  March 15 – 17, 2017;

ILACADA Fall 2017 Drive-In Event will be held in September 2017

If you’re interested in participating in a group that will work together with our advising corps across campus so that we can take advantage of what is happening in our organizations, please reach out to Joey ( by May 31st so that planning can begin.

UARC Daily News: Congratulations graduates! We’re so proud to be your advisors!

Commencements began with Lavender Graduation last Friday (4/29/16) with this week’s commencements kick off with the Honors College Convocation (5/4/16).
