2015-2016 Events for Advisors
It was a great year! We have offered a number of events for you!
Featured events from 2015 – 2016
2015 – 2016 provided us with an opportunity for planning, sponsoring, and providing information on events both on and off campus that benefit advisors. Events ranged from training, workshops, and presentations to networking events.
The wide variety of events for UIC advisors provided them with a chance to learn, network, and support the UIC community. Take a peek at what we’ve experienced!
2015 – 2016 Events
Our spring semester kicked off with a great Brown Bag in February where our own advisors presented on their career trajectory and professional development opportunities, providing advice to others on how to advance themselves and grow in the profession.
We followed that up with a fantastic Advising Summit in late February featuring information and work with our Summer Session! We did table discussion and worked through some case studies about situations we face in advising for summer. It was enjoyable and continues our fantastic partnership with Summer Session.
Not to be outdone by our great Advising Summit, we followed that with an unprecedented Fourth Annual Advisor Week! There’s more information on the week’s activities on our Advisor Week page, but we couldn’t pass up a chance to show you some of the fun moments we experienced together in the over 14 events we held!
Catching our breath for a bit during the end of the year activities for the campus and in our units, we followed up our first Disability Resource Center Brown Bag with another one we called “DRC 2.0” and we watched two NACADA Webinars including “A Narrative Approach to Academic Advising: Helping Students Create Their Stories.”
By advisor request, our summer was spent networking and providing a way to interact outside the office while our advisors have been busy with new student orientations. We’ve gone to the movies both in Millennium Park, brewery tours, and a dream team of advisors won Trivia Night at one of our local establishments. Check out some of our great photos from this summer’s networking activities!
Our fall semester was anchored by activities surrounding first generation students and campus based viewings of NACADA’s film and webinars. We followed that up with our incisive Advising Summit with the theme of bringing the conversation on UIC’s first generation students and advising into our home context.
Our 2015 – 2016 Advising Summits summaries and presentations are available on the Advising Summit page, but don’t miss advisors participating in Flames Friday.
We want to thank the staff from the Disability Resource Center for coming to speak with advisors for our recent Brown Bag discussion held Tuesday, September 29th. Thank you to the advisors who attended. There will be more events with the DRC and their director Roxana Stupp presented an open invitation to advisors to visit the DRC!
One of our recent events, sponsored by the UARC Steering Committee, was a networking event held August 6th on UIC’s South Campus at Ph.D. Pub called “Advisors Celebrate Summer BBQ”!
We also went on a visit to Millennium Park to see the movie “The Breakfast Club.” It was our inaugural trip and we’ll for sure do it again next summer!
