4. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Fall trainings for new University Hearing Panelists in October
The Office of the Dean of Students is seeking staff/faculty/students who would like to become hearing panelists:
The University Hearing Panel is responsible for hearing cases of alleged violations of the UIC Student Disciplinary Policy also known as the Student Code of Conduct. Members are directly responsible for deciding if a violation occurred and determining sanctions. This panel has the distinction of protecting the interests of the campus community and the students’ rights. In this capacity, prospective University Hearing Panel members should be free of bias, judgment, or prejudice.
The University Hearing Panel is comprised of faculty, staff, and student members. This provides the opportunity for students, faculty, and staff members to work collaboratively for a common purpose. Prospective student members must be in good academic and disciplinary standing at UIC. Through participation in the University Hearing Panel, participants will:
Enhance active listening skills
Learn ethics and conflict resolution skills
Utilize analytical and critical thinking skills
Formulate well-reasoned questions and decisions
Strengthen understanding of the UIC Student Disciplinary Policy
In order to become a member of the University Hearing Panel, you must attend one of the following trainings:

There are times when life pushes us into a new direction and we are left without a plan on how to proceed. Sometimes we don’t do as well in classes we need to pursue a lifelong dream. Sometimes a new interest takes control of our lives. In any case, you need a plan. And Life Coach Ellen Burton wants to help you create one!
Ellen Burton has been called an inspirational leader and a catalyst for change. Her ability to assist and focus coaching clients achieving their goals is exceptional! In addition to personal and professional coaching, Ellen is a nationally acclaimed business lecturer and motivational speaker.
Ellen’s initial career as a Certified Athletic Trainer allowed her to contribute to Division One intercollegiate athletic medicine teams (The University of Michigan, The University of Cincinnati and Eastern Michigan University). Ellen’s clients include senior executives, middle managers, physicians, academics and small business owners. And soon YOU!
This is a two-hour workshop. Not a lecture! That’s boring and our dreams are not boring. We will be working on our dreams! Bring a friend!

8. SHARE WITH STUDENTS: Student Research Forum and upcoming workshops for students this October!
The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, in conjunction with the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs, Honors College and the University of Illinois Alumni Association, is pleased to announce the 2016 Student Research Forum (SRF), which will be held on April 12, 2016. This important campus-wide event showcases undergraduate, graduate and professional student research covering a broad range of scholarship: Art/Design/Humanities; Business/Computer Science/Mathematics; Engineering/Physical Sciences; Life Sciences; and Social Sciences. In addition to awards in the above categories, awards will be given to the top student research projects that best reflect the principles of sustainability and those that use women, sex, and/or gender as the central focus of their study or which have a primary focus on understanding sex or gender differences related to the topic under study.

Student Research Forum Library Workshop Series
Getting Started with Your Research
If you plan to present at the Student Research Forum or elsewhere in the Spring, now is the time to get started with your research. In this workshop librarians will work with any and all students to:
- Develop Your Topic: Is your topic too broad or too narrow? Librarians will help you address this and other issues that can crop up as you develop a research topic.
- Find Resources: What are the best resources in your field? How should you use them? What are effective strategies for figuring out which articles you should read?
- Organize What You Find: There are tools that help you save and organize the materials you find online. They can save you a lot of time and even save you from accidental plagiarism. Librarians will briefly introduce you to these tools.

How To Read and Use Scholarly Journal Articles
If you have ever read a journal article, the core expression of scholarship in a wide variety of fields, you may have felt that reading and understanding journal articles is hard. You aren’t the only one. This workshop is meant to provide you with some advice and methods for breaking a journal article into manageable pieces and extracting the key information from it for your research. Open to students from all fields and all disciplines!

9. SHARE WITH STUDENTS: New UIC Black Tech Scholars Program Info Sessions (10/20 and 10/21)
In collaboration with the Chicago tech incubator and learning lab Blue1647 and Productive Edge, a dynamic and innovative technology company, the University of Illinois at Chicago’s African American Academic Network and Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies have partnered to implement a pilot program that will foster diversity in the technology space through coding opportunities. The BlackTech Scholars Program is geared to provide 15 UIC African American undergraduate students (Junior/Senior status)with the opportunity to acquire business acumen and gain valuable hands-on experience building mobile-friendly websites.
Starting in January 2016, this program will be featured as a UIC Experience co-curricular opportunity that will enhance students learning and development. Through this program, students will obtain entrepreneurial skills and an awareness of social issues through launching new ventures that impact the larger social and economic environment. The program will introduce the following:
(1) essential business startup concepts and various aspects of marketing, organization design and business modeling; and
(2) coding curriculum that includes case projects that incorporates marketing campaign, web and mobile development application
In addition to gaining relevant technical skills that can eventually prepare them for careers within the tech industry, Scholars also learn critical leadership, entrepreneurship and life skills under the guidance of staff members and mentors who are professionals working in the field.

Fall '15 Term B CC120 sections being canceled due to low enrollment: 34934, 34935, 34939, 34940.
First-year students can register for 34936 (Mondays, 11:00-1:00) or 34937 (Wednesdays, 11:00-1:00).
2nd-year and upper-level students can register for 34938 (Mondays, 1:00-3:00).
