For some this may be a duplicate announcement, but it this interactive event will be a unique opportunity for UIC students to be in the center of this discussion with government leaders.  U.S. Study Abroad: An Investment in Your Future, a dialogue with U.S. Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Evan RyanThey will be joined by two UIC Study Abroad alumni for a discussion about the impact of their experiences.  If you have an opportunity to share this announcement with students, please do so.

YOU’RE INVITED: Campus Housing invites you to be part of the Chancellor’s Move-In Crew on August 17th

Hello!

I want to invite you to volunteer to help to make Freshman move–in day a great experience when we welcome the freshmen on August 17th.

I am also excited to announce that the Chancellor and his wife will again help our resident students move in!

Freshmen are officially welcomed to move-in on Wednesday, August 17th. This day is always an exciting time for the UIC Community as our freshman residents arrive on campus with their families and their hopes and dreams for their future in their hearts.  As we continue to increase Campus involvement, your efforts are crucial to providing support and encouragement to our students and their families during this very busy day.

During freshman move-in day we would like to have you at key places in the south and east residential complex helping us welcome parents and students as they arrive.

Move-in will start at 8am, with the largest part of our students coming in between 9:00am to noon.  We continue to see residents arrive throughout the afternoon and need assistance throughout the day ending at 4:00pm. Plan to join us for at least 2 hours during the day, however even an hour lending a hand works for us! Housing will provide you with a Polo Shirt (unless you still have your shirt from last year) and guidelines for your task that day.

We have a variety of jobs including the Hospitality Station where we will provide water, a T-Shirt distribution station for Freshmen to receive their Campus Housing T-shirt and several Drop and Go Zones where we will help unload cars.

Please respond to Susan Teggatz, copied on this e-mail, with your availability for the day and your shirt size if you need a polo shirt.

Save the Date: August 17th, 2016 – Times and positions will be emailed in a follow-up email on Monday, Aug. 15th.

Save the date for the Midwest First Year Conference being held at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb on 9/23!

The MFYC regional drive-in conference provides a dynamic forum for faculty, administrators, and professional staff to share ideas, resources, and engaging pedagogy to enhance the experience of first-year students on two- and four-year campuses.
REGISTRATION is now open!

Registration Fees (continental breakfast and lunch included):

  • Early Bird: (before 08/26/16): $90
  • Professional: (after 8/26/16): $100
  • Day of Event/ At the Door: $100
  • Graduate Student: $65

Keynote Speaker
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Jennifer Keup, Director of the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Student in Transition.   In this capacity, she leads a team of professionals who coordinate the Center’s conferences and continuing education, publications, research and assessment activities, public relations, and resource development. Jennifer also serves as an affiliated faculty member in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policies in the College of Education at the University of South Carolina, where she teaches graduate courses, advises students, and serves on thesis and dissertation committees.

Jennifer’s research interests focus on two complementary areas of scholarship: 1) the first-year experience and students in transition and 2) high-impact practices and institutional interventions. Under the umbrella of this agenda, she has engaged in scholarly work, teaching, and service on many topics such as college student characteristics; the impact of college on students; student access, development, learning, and success; curriculum and student services; peer leadership; community college and transfer issues; leadership and institutional effectiveness; student performance, adjustment, and attainment; and higher education assessment..

Midwest First-Year Student Champion Award
We invite you to nominate a colleague for the Midwest First-Year Conference Champion Award: Award Criteria and Nomination Process.  The Midwest First Year Conference is eager to recognize higher education professionals who exemplify outstanding service and leadership in working with first-year students.  This award will be presented at the 2016 Midwest First-Year Conference. The winner will receive a plaque and free conference registration to the 2017 Annual Conference on The First-Year Experience (Feb. 11-14, 2017 in Atlanta, GA).

SHARE WITH STUDENTS/UPCOMING EVENTS: Lavender Graduation is 4/29

Register today for the 10th Annual Lavender Graduation ceremony on Friday, April 29th, 2016. This year we will celebrate at the National Hellenic Museum and our keynote speaker is Tania Unzueta Carrasco, Policy and Legal Director for Mijente and an organizer with the Not1More Campaign and Chicago’s Organized Communities Against Deportations.

Lavender Graduation is a unique convocation ceremony that honors the academic achievements of UIC’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and allied (LGBTQA) graduating class. The event is open to students from every college at UIC and our graduate pool grows larger each year. Lavender Graduation is one of the Gender and Sexuality Center’s hallmark programs. Students throughout the years have testified that the prospect of walking in “Lav Grad” motivates them through tough times with juggling classwork and other obligations. In addition to several other programs we offer, Lavender Graduation supports the attraction, retention and successful graduation of many LGBTQA students each year.

1 – Youth Empowerment Performance Project
Join us for a storytelling performance by YEPP, a Chicag-based organization devoted to seeking a safe environment for LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness to explore their history, investigate new ways to explore their struggle, and celebrate their strengths through performance.

2 – Panel Discussion & Group Dialogue
The performance will be followed by a Q&A/discussion featuring a panel that includes Bonsai Bermudez, Executive and Artistic Director of YEPP, Artistic Director Dr. Casey Holtschneider, Visiting Research Specialist at UIC’s Jane Addams College of Social Work, and members of the YEPP ensemble.

We will also have information and resources for students experiencing housing instability, including the Wellness Center’s Pop-Up Pantry and Emergency Go Bags.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: RSVP is available for Honors College lunch and screening of NACADA Webinar (11/20)

The Honors College is hosting an open house for advisors on Friday, November 20 from 12pm to 2pm in Burnham Hall.

At noon, we will be offering lunch and a screening of the NACADA webinar Academic Advising for High Achieving Students: Strategies that Foster Resilience, followed by a discussion.

The AANAPISI grant has been funding a range of student services for the past five years ? from ASAM courses and AARCC programs, to tutoring in the Writing Center, undergraduate advising, and mentoring from Career Services.
The Town Hall will highlight the accomplishments of the AANAPISI grant programs that have benefited UIC students and provide a preview of the new AANAPISI programs being launched this year!
