UARC is pleased to provide you with a robust calendar of events for the Spring 2016 semester. You can review the full calendar at the 2015-2016 events page and save time on your calendar, but we want to highlight some of the events for you:

UARC BROWN BAGS
The Brown Bags Subcommittee is bringing you three webinars this spring all being held from 12:00 – 1:00 pm and will be sending along more information, but SAVE THE DATES:

Disability Resource Center 2.0 – talking through your questions with staff members of the Disability Resource Center being held on on an exact date to be determined during the week of January 25th – Exact Date TBD)

Making the Most of Advisor Professional Development: A Panel Discussion being held on Thursday, February 18th

NACADA Webinar: Advising Needs of First Generation Students: Taking a Closer Look being held on March 23rd (ADVISOR WEEK)

WEBINARS
Spring 2016 will see the inaugural UARC Webinars called “Wednesdays at 1,” which will be a monthly webinar series beginning in January and featuring college presenters doing monthly webinar presentations. Currently the dates are normally the second Wednesday of the month (1/13, 2/17, 3/9, 4/20, and 5/11). More information will be coming from UARC in early January.

SPRING 2016 ADVISING SUMMIT
The Spring 2016 Advising Summit will be held on Friday, February 12th. The Advising Summit Planning Team is hard at work. Please hold the morning between 9:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. for an exciting gathering for all members of the advising community on campus.

ADVISOR WEEK 2016
It’s back and it’s bigger than ever! The Fourth Annual Advisor Week held during Spring Break is a set of activities and experiences not to be missed! The organized activities will again be held from Tuesday, March 22nd through Thursday, March 24th and it will definitely be our own advisor version of MARCH MADNESS!

The events will kick off with a day long Advisor Conference, followed up by brown bag discussions, presentations, and common readings discussion, etc.

But not to be outdone by the professional development areas, the Advisor Week Planning Team has already secured a fantastic slate of fun activities to enjoy with fellow advisors – join us for cooking class, painting class, dance lessons, and a trip to the Harris Theatre for Music and Dance for MIX AT 6!

This year, if you attend events you get your name entered to win a prize at the end of the week…the more events you attend, the better your chances! And don’t forget, there’s the annual advisor gift too!


PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Fall 2015 Advising Summit Presentations available on Summit web page.

For those of you who attended the Fall 2015 Advising Summit, you should have received an email providing you with information from the Summit and an opportunity to provide feedback.

For all who were unable to attend the Summit on November 6th, the Advising Summits page has been updated and all of the presentations are available for download. Please keep in mind that for the presentation on the research on UIC First Generation Students, downloading that presentation is restricted to those advisors, faculty, and staff on the advising listserv. If you would like access to that presentation and you cannot currently download it, please contact Joey Volpe (jvolpe@uic.edu) to obtain access.

UARC will be hosting activities March 24th through March 26th with campus partners. There will be three featured talks by UIC advisors through our Advisors’ Conference, Tuesday/Thursday Topics Common Reading, networking activities, and much more. 3. SHARE WITH STUDENTS – Life Hacks by Grace Hopper on March 11, 2015 from 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm in The Women’s Leadership and Resource Center.
Join the Women in Science & Engineering program as we learn more about Grace Hopper and real life lessons anyone can use today. Grace Hopper was a computer programmer who helped develop a compiler that was a precursor to the widely used COBOL language and became a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy.

Local film maker, Melissa Pierce, will join us to share some life hacks she has learned while making a film about Grace Hopper. Pierce is executive director of Chicago Women Developers. She has been named a Crain’s Chicago “Tech 50” – top movers and shakers to know in Chicago tech and Blue Sky Innovation names her one of the 100 top Chicago innovators. Pierce is founder of Pitch Refinery Conference, Board Member and Former COO of Everpurse and the co-chair of Affinity Alliance at NCWIT.

4. SHARE WITH STUDENTS – International Student Career Week held March 9th- 13th; list of events below.
The Office of International Services, in conjunction with the Office of Career Services, would like to invite you to the 2015 International Student Career Week. The workshops found at the link are designed to help international students navigate the world of finding employment. Whether you are a student looking for an internship or are about to graduate and are looking for a post-graduation job, these workshops will cover the basics of resume and cover letter writing to interview skills and navigating the U.S. immigration system. For all of the events besides the Coffee Hour, we ask that you reserve a place by sending an email to oisactivities@uic.edu.

5. Study Abroad First Step *Daily* Information Sessions –Program Deadline is March 20th
Please encourage your students to consider study abroad as part of their undergraduate experience at UIC. We have a portfolio of 200 programs with courses available in almost every discipline. And there is a substantial scholarship and grant funding access. Program application deadline is March 20.

6. SHARE WITH STUDENTS – OVCSA Undergraduate Student Scholarship Opportunities for 2015-2016 Academic Year: Deadline March 30th
The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (OVCSA) is accepting applications for nine competitive scholarship awards available to students across all colleges and academic disciplines:

• Supporting Excellence Endowment (S.E.E.) Scholarship
• Dr. Thomas Beckham Memorial Scholarship
• VCSA Scholarship
• Gordon J. Flesch Memorial Scholarship
• University of Illinois Alumni Association Pier Scholar Award
• Rundgren Foundation Scholarship
• Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship
• UIC Jim’s Original Scholarship
• Lorilyn Espique Aquino Fund

Each scholarship provides between $1,000 and $5,000 to the recipients for the 2015-2016 year. Information about each scholarship and the online application are available on the OVCSA website at http://vcsa.uic.edu/scholarships/

7. SHARE WITH STUDENTS – Pop-up Food Pantry Commuter Center Event on March 10th and 11th from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm.
March 10th & 11th at the Commuter Student Resource Center from 10:00am-5:00pm, the Wellness Center, USG, the Greek Programming Board, and the Student Activities Board are organizing a food drive. All donations from the food drive will go directly to support the Pop-Up Pantry.

• Donate 0-5 items, and receive a free USG hacky sack
• Donate 5-29 items, and receive a free water bottle or coffee tumbler
• Donate 30 items or more, and receive a free USG hoodie

Food Drive Donation Guidelines:

Products must be;
• In cans, cartons, or bags
• Non-perishable (requires no refrigeration or freezing)

• Free of damage, stains, moisture, etc.
• We will not accept items in glass containers for safety reasons.
• Items donated must be unopened.

Items most needed:
• Canned Fish/Canned Meats
• Canned Soup or Soup Packets
• Canned Vegetables
• Canned Beans
• Cereal /Granola Bars/Oatmeal
• Instant meal in a cup (ex. mac & cheese)

8. Disability Resource Center has a position available – Visiting Student Disability Specialist
The University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking applicants for the position of Visiting Student Disability Specialist.

The Student Disability Specialist advises new and continuing students on disability services and accommodations at UIC. Interviews students to determine eligibility, ensures documentation is appropriate and collaborates with disability technology specialist to provide campus access. The Visiting Student Disability Specialist is also responsible for follow up consultation and advisement, student evaluation and assessments and student record maintenance.

A Bachelor’s degree in disability studies or social services, with a focus on disability is required. A minimum of two to four years experience as a case manager or in a student advocacy position, working directly with adults with disabilities. Knowledge of disability-related laws and a large variety of disabilities and conditions. Strong verbal and written communications skills; analytical, organizational and Microsoft Office skills.

9. BA in Public Health Information Sessions
The School of Public Health is holding information sessions for students who are interested in learning more about the Bachelor of Arts in Public Health. Session topics include: What is Public Health?; General Education and Major Public Health (PUBH) Course Offerings; Prerequisites to the Major; Admission Requirements and Application Process; Public Health Career Opportunities; and Q&A.

Spring 2015 Advising Summit 3/13/15 – RSVP needed by Friday, March 6th!

We are looking forward to our Spring 2015 Advising Summit, which will be held next Friday, March 13th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (Check-in at 9:30 a.m.)

 

The summit will feature an update from Tom Moss on the Student Success Initiative and speakers from our colleges who will provide updates on their advising processes, college policies, and information useful to advisors across campus. Our colleges presenting this spring are:

-College of Nursing

 

In the fall summit, we will have college speakers from the College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts, the College of Engineering, the Honors College, the School of Public Health, and the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs.

 

The Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs and the Undergraduate Advising Resource Center are very pleased to be able to provide lunch for advisors to network, share news informally, and get to know colleagues at 12:00 p.m. after the summit.
